Car seat.

So I think I may have told this story a couple months ago, but I'm going to tell it again because it goes along with the theme of this post, which is: Kayelynn will be turning 1 in -4- days, and I am not turning her car seat to face forward. (She doesn't weight enough anyway.)

At Kayelynn's 9 month well child check she was scheduled to see her regular doctor. The doctors office called a couple days before and said that a pediatrician from some other doctors office or something was going to be at Kayelynn's doctor and they wanted to know if it was okay if they switched her appointment so that she could see him. (Kayelynn normally just sees one of the regular family doctors.) I said yea that would be fine. Well we go to see him and I just didn't like him. Honestly he was just getting on my nerves the whole time. (Plus I had Seth and Paige with me. It is not easy to have a 9 month old, a 2 year old, and a 4 year old confined to a little room all by yourself.) So anyway I thought she was supposed to be getting some shots. He named the ones she got at her last appointment and was like "The only one she has to get is her 3rd something shot." I don't remember which one it was. Anyway I knew she had gotten it at her last appointment. FINALLY after 10 minutes he went to see if they had her shot record written down somewhere other than just documented in the computer. (That pissed me off because not only did it take an unnecessary amount of time for him to listen to me they should have all of that checked and then checked again so that they don't make these mistakes.) He came back and sure enough I was right. So, if I wouldn't have been paying attention at her 6 month appointment she would have gotten a shot that she didn't need/had already gotten last time. I was so mad!

So after he determined that she didn't need any shots or anything we're getting ready to go and he's like "I see she's going to be one soon, you could probably go ahead and face her car seat the other way." He then flips to her weight and then says "Oh wait, she only weighs 15 pound, can't turn her around yet." REALLY. Not only do the laws state that a child has to be 1 year old AND weigh 20 pounds, doctors should not advise their patients to turn a child around 3 months early anyway! I am still mad about this. I don't think even if a child meets the requirements a doctor should advise parents to switch them around. They should let them know their options, yes, but they should also inform parents that it is best to wait until your child outgrows the weight and height restrictions on the car seat.

I know so many girls who turn their children around at 8 or 9 months because their doctor tells them that they weigh enough. HELLO?!? Their weight has nothing to do with the fact that their neck muscles are not strong enough to with-stand a car crash if in a forward facing car seat.

So, Kayelynn will be turning one in 4 days and she will continue to be rear facing until she outgrows her carseat while it's rear facing. (Which could be a while because the weight restriction is 30 pounds and she only weighs 18 now.)

Rant over now.

  1. We did turn Grace around in her car seat, but NOT until she turned one.. that doctor is NUTS! Like you said.. it is illegal to tunr them around before they turn one.
We turned Grace around because she was getting too long for it. Her poor little legs were crammed up against her. Plus she already weighed about 25 lbs. Her car seat goes up to 40 lbs though.. She would be about 3 if we waited that long to turn her around. She is a lot happier now that we have turned her around too.

At least you are smarted than that doctor and know your facts.. I hate doctors like that!

  2. Ha Ha. You go girl! We extended rear faced Samantha for awhile because I knew her muscles were not strong enough, but she is too big now. It's just be too uncomfortable for her. So we turned her around awhile back.
Oh and Christina, I am not sure. Samantha is almost 40 pounds and has been since she turned 2. I bet Grace will be right up there with her when she turns 2. lol.

  3. Unfortunately I was one of those STUPID moms. Kaedyn was 33lbs at 7 months and in no way could fit his infant seat anymore. So we bought him a new seat and turned him around. Sad to say but not until i was pregnant with Ellanoa did I understand why people extended rear faced. never really heard of it before. But I am happy to say that little Ellanoa will be extended rear facing for awhile in a Complete Air 65.

  5. Paige will be 3 in 2 months and only weighs 26 pounds. (Seth turned 4 in October and he's only 30.) I've actually put Paige in Kayelynn's rear facing seat before when I had to go to the store but didn't have Paige's car seat buckled in. Her lets were cramped but she liked pretending she was a baby again. Lol.
