Sooo.. Brian bought some baby chicks around Easter. We have 7. 3 of them are roosters, 4 are hens. They've been laying eggs for a few weeks now.
We made our own incubator out of a Styrofoam cooler. It takes 21 days for the chicks to hatch.
You can hold the egg up to a flashlight in a dark room and see inside to see if it's forming. We had 2 eggs that were supposed to hatch last week. They never did. :( We cracked the eggs open ourselves. The chicks were fully formed, they just never broke the shell of the egg open.
Well, we had another egg that was supposed to hack yesterday, AND IT DID!!! It was so cool and Seth, Paige, and Kayelynn got to watch! There's another one hatching right now. It should be fully hatched tomorrow. It's exciting!!

Ah! I Love baby chickens! Unfortunately, out of the 3 baby chicks we raised and free ranged, only one has survived other predators. It is a Rooster, so he doesn't lay eggs, obviously, so I want to get some more hens next year.
ReplyDeleteDo you guys keep them in a coop or what? I bet they love having chickens!
We do have a coop that Brian built so they have room outside in the yard also. We have one rooster that we let roam around in the yard.
DeleteAnd yes, they LOVE them. Lol.
